In the press release of September 12th, 2014, the National Institute of Statistic has disseminated the first results of the general population and housing census of 2014. This is the twelfth one in the history of Tunisia and the first after the revolution.

This census has respected the 2010 round of population and housing census recommendations (2005-2014) of United Nations to conduct a census in all countries members. The overall objective is to provide a better understanding of the socio-demographic and economic and living conditions of the country and its dynamics in order to promote the political decisions and best management of the economy good pacification for better development of Tunisia. According to the schedule of the census, which the institute is committed from the beginning, the step of dissemination has just began in September 2014. The first results include population by gender and locality (communal and rural) as well as houses and households by locality at the smallest administrative unit (sector).

Population in 2014
According to the first results of the census, the number of residents in Tunisia in 2014 is 10 982.8 thousand people. So an annual average increase is estimated to 1.03% relative to the population in 2004 (9 910.9 miles residents). The number of male is 5 472.4 thousands, forming 49.8% of the population. The number of women is 5 510.4 thousands, corresponding to 50.2% of the population. This is the first time through censuses, the number of women exceeds the number of men. Nearly 38 thousand people is the difference between the two sexes. This is explained by the superiority of life expectancy of women to men and the superiority of the male migration than female migration.

Population in the governorate
In terms of population distribution by governorate, a great disparity is prominent. The four governorates (Tunis, Sfax, Sousse, Nabeul) are inhabited by 32% of the resident population and each of them has more than 6% of the population. Otherwise the southern governorates contain the lowest density of the population.
Regarding to the annual growth rate since the year 2004, an increase is noticeable in the major governorates and especially the coast ones. Conversely the negative rates occurred in the Northwest governorates where the growth rate in this region fallen to -0.36%.
